PriorUs Giving Physicians a New Way to Keep in Touch
The entire healthcare segment has, for the most part, yielded a lot of discussion especially over the last few months as hospitals and other healthcare providers try to keep from going out of business, while at the same time placating the growing numbers who believe the costs of healthcare only get more outrageous with the passage of time. Electronic Medical Solutions, meanwhile, is currently developing a new kind of secure online network, known as PriorUs, that looks to not only give physicians a new way to stay in contact, but improve efficiency and reduce costs.
The PriorUs system is currently in use at several hospitals and primary care physician offices in the Wichita area and operates like a giant Facebook (News - Alert) wall for each patient in a physician's purview. Doctors receive text messages via the app.Then, in fully keeping with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), doctors use a PIN code to unlock the messages sent. The messages can then be read by the doctors in question, responded to accordingly or kept for future reference, and then proceed to the Facebook wall-style facility from there for easier access. Additionally, the company plans to bring into play social networking functions as well as IT integration to make it more readily work with the software in place.
Early testing has revealed some minor glitches, as early testing commonly does, but apparently things are proceeding apace as plans are in place to launch the system in the early days of 2013, and over a much wider area. The system has been under development for eight months now, so seeing a new version go wide makes a note of sense. As for pricing, PriorUs will have something of a tiered approach, offering up the text messaging part of the service at no charge, but adding costs on for the IT integration and social messaging components.
The larger-scale approach PriorUs seems to be taking with this system; rather than focusing on one doctor dealing with one patient, it instead puts its focus on multiple doctors in a multiple patient environment, which in turn should help doctors to improve their efficiencies in a high-stress environment like that commonly found at a hospital.
The use of technology to improve practices and reduce costs, especially in a necessary field like healthcare, should go a good ways toward reducing insurance costs and allowing more people access to the life-saving care they need. Only time will tell if this proves to be the case, however, but for the short term Electronic Medical Solutions' PriorUs looks like a good idea indeed.
